After High School, I continued surfing in Santa Cruz. I moved to Hawaii For warm water and better waves and to live with my grandfather. There I became part of the surf board industry. Working for Inter Island Surfboards, Surfboard Makaha, then moved to Maui to start a branch of Lightning Bolt Surfboards. While there I had a chance to hop a ship the USGS Pioneer that went on the Indian Ocean Expedition with the U.S. Coast and Geodetic Survey. I did and spent a year traversing the Pacific, onto the Mariana Trench and made several world records in regards to depths of some of the scientific procedures. We moved into the Indian Ocean to continue the other science related projects. We carried out many experiments in the water column as well as the ocean floor and the atmosphere above. Not only the scientific endeavors undertook was fascinating but seeing the people and cultures before McDonalds and the rest of modern world got there.

After that adventure I moved to Santa Barbara and became a commercial fisherman harpooning sword fish and had a special fishing license to catch and train California Sea lions, porpoises as well as pilot whales. and on my spare time, I worked on a top sail Schooner named the Swift that was brought from Iswitch, Mass. by James Cagney.

I wanted to see more of the world so I moved to New York City to go to a merchant marine upgrading school. After completion, I moved to San Francisco as it to be my home port to ship out into the Far East. I was on ships delivering ammunition for the troops as well as working coastal tanker duty as well as bringing cargo though the Panama Canal to the East Coast.

I became disenchanted with the long hard life as a merchant seaman and moved to a yoga ashram for several years. There I decided to move back to Hawaii to again surf and work in the industry.

I moved back to the Santa Cruz area, got married to Annie Egan had two boys. I work than as a care taker for the Rancho Del Oso (Waddell Valley) Owned by Hulda Hoover McLean, President Hoover's niece and daughter of Ted Hoover head of Standford University's Geology Dept. During the lat 30's and 40's. While in the valley I became a blacksmith going to New Mexico to apprentice as well as apprenticed under Alex Wagers of sculpturing fame in Carmel Valley. I became very versed as a black smith and was asked to be part of a group that started The California Black Smith Association. I did work shops in black smithing at several colleges and private camps. As well as did practical black smithing more in the genre of Spanish Colonial and fire tempering of metals. (not furrier work) I moved to Humboldt, County to start a black smith shop.

In Humboldt County I decided to go back to school since being a black smith was tough on paying family bills. I first attending Collage of the Redwoods than transferring to Humboldt State University I got A BS. Oceanography and Math as an emphasis and continued receiving my California Teaching Credential. I taught 25 years in the Gonzales Unified School district as a fifth grade teacher and became a Harden Foundation Teacher Excellence Award recipient. During those years I have done stints as a wrestling coach, the Gonzales High School Women's Basketball coach, softball coach and as well Coached the Gonzales High Volleyball team, and garnishing championships as well as Coach of the Year several times. I attribute my success to those Los Altos coaches that I was so fortunate to have played for. Their techniques were the foundation to my coaching style. Besides coaching duties I became head of the middle school Math Dept., head of the middle school Science Dept., Grade Level Representative, And President of local Teachers union for several years.

I retired from teaching 2010 after 25 years teaching, Not counting the preschool teaching stint as I went to college. Now I fish, do the surfing, traveling, and and try to keep a healthy life style so to enjoy my grand children longer.

Mark was one of the good guys...  I tranferred from Palo Alto to Layola School right in the middle of the 5th grade year just after the Christmas vacation.  I just lost all my chilhood school friends in Palo Alto by moving to what seemed like a million miles away.  It was the first week at my new school  and I didn't know anyone.  It was lonely.  The only person i knew was also a new student Mike Kamrar who had also transferred during the Christmas break...  The newness created a bond.  During the lunch resess after Mike and I quietly ate our lunch, we santered out to the basket ball court to watch a heated game of basket ball with likes of John McCormick, John Finney, Steve Flamer, "Tank" Mark Young, and others. At the time we didn't know who any one's name or who they were.  As Mike and I stood on the side lines wishing that we could get into the game and be part of the arguement this big kid, bigger than the rest of the kids, slowly walked up to us and polity asked hey you want to play basket ball with us.  It brought a huge smile to both of us to be ask to join. That was the start of life long aquintences and friends.  It started with a nice guy asking us to be part of a game.

John... I had said that I would be in Australia the last coupler of weeks in Sept. I said I wanted to visit you in Canberra. You suggested taking a bus to get the lay of the land. Well here is a possible Itinerary: I'm going to be in Sydney the 30th. On the 31st of Sept, I take the Murray bus from the airport to Canberra then you can get me and I stay for several days thinking 4 or 5 days. Is that to long of a stay since you are still working. Then bus back to Airport fly back to Hawaii. I need a response since I'm holding the return trip open until I hear from you. Hope this works out to be able to see an old buddy. ....Nino
