What a time that was, with our Football team winning championships under Coach Tom Burt, our basketball team winning championships with Coach Dude Angius, our swim team and water polo team producing Olympians,  our track team racking up more championships under Coach Leo Long, and our baseball team stellar with future pro player Pete Middlekauff.  One year Los Altos swept the SCVAL championships in seven major sports (Football, Cross Country, Basketball, Baseball, Track and Field, Swimming, Water Polo). I don't believe this has happened since.

After graduating from SJSU I joined the coaching staff at LAHS. Mr. Leo Long was head coach. I thought I’d share with you my first encounter with Leo.

I was a member of the SJS track team back in the day. One afternoon we competed against Stanford University at our home field. I was warming up on the track for the 100-yard dash with my teammates when a javelin speared the ground a few feet from us. “What the hell?” We stared off into the distance to where the field events were being held. Stanford’s Leo Long had launched the longest throw ever at our field, an Olympian toss that left everyone open-mouthed. For the rest of the day, whenever Leo prepared to toss the javelin, everyone kept an eye glued on him … and his javelin.

My heart is broken. Leo was an amazing person and track coach. So sorry to hear of his passing. Words alone cannot express the influence Leo had on so many individuals. He taught me everything I learned about being a good pole vaulter. A fantastic mentor. My heart goes out to all his family. He will surely be missed. RIP Leo.

I feel so sad to lose another great coach from Los Altos...  and am hoping that the memorial service will be held near Los Altos, so that many of us who are still in the area can go and listen to more stories (like Mr. Giardina's!!!) about his life.  He will be greatly missed.  God bless and comfort his family and close friends as well as all of us...  Ginni Small Chambers
