Dude Angius Scholarship

A Scholarship in Memory of Dude Angius:

A Scholarship has been established in memory of Dude which will be given annually to reward and motivate a graduating LAHS senior who demonstrates excellent leadership potential.  An account for the scholarship has been created at the MV-LA High School District Office, and thanks to donations from alumni, retired faculty, and the Los Altos community, the initial $50,000 goal of the Dude Angius Scholarship fund was exceeded!

Each year three seniors are selected as finalists for the scholarship based on demonstrated success in a rigorous and  challenging schedule of coursework, and leadership and service at school or in the community.  The students are nominated by the school faculty.  Three finalists are then selected by the scholarship committee composed of  school counselors, administrators, and faculty, based on academic achievement, demonstration of leadership potential, and financial need.  The winner is selected by the Angius family - Barbara, Mike, Bob, Dan, and Toni, plus Jeff, Dan, and Lauren, three of Dude's adult grandchildren.  Their decision is based on application essays and letters of recommendation from faculty and staff.

The first $5000 scholarship was given on May 27, 2015,  to Jhosseline Guardado, who graduated in 2019 from UC Davis and is now pursuing a law degree.  The second $5000 scholarship was awarded to Bailey Thayer in 2016.  Bailey graduated from Cal Poly, San Luis Obispo with a BS in Biology in 2020. He should be in grad school now preparing to be a licensed physician's assistant.  At graduation in 2017, the third scholarship was awarded to Yessenia Gutierrez who earned a degree in political science from Holy Cross College in Massachusetts.  She's in grad. school now preparing to be a legal assistant for immigration.   In 2018, the 4th scholarship was awarded to Alitcel Camacho Perez who recently earned a degree in political science at Sonoma State University, and is preparing for law school.  In 2019, Luis Ignacio was awarded the 5th scholarship and will earn a degree in computer science at UC Berkeley next May.  He plans to earn a masters degree in Artificial Intelligence and Cybersecurity.  Maily Juarez earned the scholarship in 2020, and is a math major at San Jose State.  After graduation she will work towards a master's degree and credential to be a math teacher.  Laila al-Agbash won the scholarship in 2021 and is studying neuroscience at UC Riverside.  Her ultimate goal is to be a physician or physician assistant.  Fatima Ortega-Pilo is the most recent winner.  She is majoring in psychology at UC Santa Cruz, and is aiming for a career in a mental health field.

All of these scholarship winners were excellent students!  All took at least one Advanced Placement course at LAHS (and passed the national exam).  And all would not have been able to achieve their dreams of college without the Dude Angius Memorial Scholarship which is funded primarily by donations from alumni, retired faculty, and parents of alumni.  Since scholarship accounts at the district office do not accrue interest, any additional donations will extend the life span of the scholarship.  If you wish to contribute, please make your donation payable to “Los Altos High School”, with "Dude Angius Scholarship" on the memo line, and mail to:   Los Altos High School, Attention: Mary Donahue, 201 Almond Avenue, Los Altos, CA 94022.  All donations, however small, are welcome.

The Tax ID number for the the MVLA High School District is 77-0209874.
